One of the most important parts of architecture is not the structure itself but what’s outside. Direct sunlight and views into the forest led us to place the kitchen on the south side where we could capture morning light, evening light, as well as direct sunlight all day. Because the kitchen is used throughout the whole day we wanted to celebrate the way the light changes in the space. We placed large glass doors to the back yard where the morning light filters through the trees, and windows to the west where the evening light flows in around supper time. A counter-height window frames a view into the forest park to watch the kids coming and going. But more windows is not always better – we had to balance privacy, storage, and get a hard-working kitchen with plenty of storage and counter space. We always say that a perfectly placed window is better than an arbitrary enormous one. . .
